☘️ Easy Sewing for St Patrick’s Day: Make Placemats in a Snap with a Fabric Panel

Top of the mornin’ to ya!  The Irish in me is dancing a jig I’m so excited to break out these placemats for March!

The 6 placemat designs for March and Saint Patrick’s Day are the latest installment of the Monthly Placemat Program I created  for Riley Blake Designs.

The placemats include 3 with artwork and 3 with art and quotes: Happy Saint Patrick’s Day, In this house we create our own luck and Friends & Family can always be found at the end of the rainbow.

Shamrocks, rainbows and pots of gold hand painted in watercolors will make these perfect for your table all March long. If you’re Irish you will love the shamrock trio and shamrock rainbow all year long.

Just because they are designed as placemats doesn’t mean that’s all you can do with them – that’s the beauty of sewing, so many options. Use the designs for quilts, pillows, wall hangings and more.

This video is less than a minute and gives you a quick peek at the placemat designs and coordinating shamrock prints.

Time Saving Way to Sew Placemats

I was short on time to sew these together and had to make a choice: traditional binding and simple quilting or simple placemat assembly and some fun free motion quilting. (You can probably guess which I chose just by the way I described my options!)

I layered batting – back fabric face up – placemat fabric face down and sewing them all together. Then I turned, pressed and topstitched around the edge before doing some free motion quilting.

See my blog post with 🎥 video tutorial for more specific instructions on making placemats without binding.

Not Just for Placemats

Just because they are designed as placemats doesn’t mean that’s all you can do with them – that’s the beauty of sewing, so many options. Use the designs for quilts, pillows, wall hangings and more.

Happy Sewing & Happy St Patrick’s Day!

I’d Rather Be Playing Chess Fabric Sneak Peek

I’d Rather Be Playing Chess Fabric Sneak Peek

kids playing chess

THE INSPIRATION…

I have memories of sitting over a chess board with my dad when I was little, learning the rules about how each piece moved and learning to think a few moves ahead. When my son was little, the scene was recreated with me as the teacher and him as the student. Now my brother is teaching my niece and nephews – so while chess never became a passion for us it is definitely a family tradition passed down through the generations.

Chess teaches fundamental life skills: problem solving, focus, patience and strategy to name a few.  I will admit that I was more intrigued by the artistic aspects of chess: the shapes of the pieces, the textures of the wood and they myriad of themes chess sets come in beyond the traditional.  Whatever your connection to the game, I hope this fabric inspires you to sew the way it inspired me to paint!

“I’d Rather Be Playing Chess” will include 12 prints and a panel with 4 images you can use for quilts, bags and more!

Bee’s Life Panel Quilt – FREE PATTERN

Bee’s Life Panel Quilt – FREE PATTERN

Sometimes my desire to make quilts is larger than the time I have – panels to the rescue!

With the Bee’s Life panel and some borders you can create this 39″ x 58″ throw quilt in no time!

Since I spent less time piecing I had more time to do some fun machine quilting.

I did some straight quilting and stitch-in-the-ditch along the borders and then added some free motion quilting in the center. I also decided to add some clasp stitches on the dots between the inspirational sayings in the black area around the main design. (Those sayings and the bees in the corners are all part of the panel!)

There are so many ways to go!
