How to Sew a Sleep Mask

If you want to cocoon yourself in darkness for a better night sleep then sleep masks are the way to go. (Also called eye masks or dream masks) These make great stocking stuffers, party favors for sleepover and gifts. They also help shut out the light and commotion on long airplane flight.

HOW TO SEW A SLEEP MASK

Use the free template to cut 3 mask shapes (fig. 1): 2 fabrics (one for each side) and a piece of fusible fleece. (I used Pelon 987F)

Watch the video for tips to fussy cut (Cutting a piece of fabric in order to showcase a specific picture or print within it.) or a time saving tip if you are using an overall print. (start at 1 min 35 secs)

Fuse the fleece following manufacturer’s instructions to the wrong side of one of the mask fabrics.

Place the 14” piece of flat elastic is centered across the mask on the right side of one of the fabrics. (fig. 2) You can baste it in place or pin in with the layers of the mask and sew it together all at once.

Clip or Pin the layers together.
Place the front and back fabrics, right sides together with the elastic in between the right sides of the fabrics. (It sounds more confusing than it is!) (fig. 3)

Sew around the mask with 1/4″ seam allowance, leaving space on the top to turn. (fig. 4)

Clip the curves (fig. 5) and turn right side out.

Press, making sure not to heat (and melt!) the elastic.

Topstitch around the entire mask 1/8” from the edge and you are done! (fig. 6)
