DIY Scandinavian Star Ornaments – A Cozy Christmas Craft to Brighten Your Holidays
As the holiday season approaches, many of us look for ways to bring warmth, charm, and a handmade touch to our decor. Scandinavian-inspired decorations are known for their minimalistic beauty, simple designs, and natural elements that evoke a sense of cozy hygge.
Whether you are looking to add a bit of Nordic magic to your home or want to make some new holiday ornaments while using up fabric scraps, Scandinavian star ornaments are a great way to go. These beautiful stars are perfect for decorating your Christmas tree, dressing up gift bags, hanging in windows, or adding to festive garlands and more.

SUPPLIES
- Fabric Strips (4/star)
- Rotary Cutter, Ruler(s) & Mat
- Small Fabric Scissors
- Iron & ironing board
- Sewing Pins or Fabric Clips
- Embroidery Floss (to add hangers to ornaments)
OPTIONAL SUPPLIES
- Written Pattern from Etsy
- Sewing Machine & Thread
- Glue
- Mini Iron
- Tube Turners
- Bias Tape Makers (to cut down on pressing time for smaller stars)
- Reverse Grip Tweezers
- Embellishments
Traditionally these are no-sew stars but I figured out a way to make 4″ Scandinavian Stars using 2½” fabric strips as well. If you quilt, you probably have extra binding strips lying around so why not put them to use! These strips are sewn together instead of folding 4 times creating a slightly thinner, less bulky star.
Whichever method you choose, the weaving and folding is the same. The written tutorial that you can find in my Etsy Shop includes a chart showing you the fabric sizes needed for each to create different sized stars using either the sew or no-sew method.

Finishing the Scandinavian Star Ornaments
Now that your fabric star is complete it’s time to add a hanger and any embellishments you’d like!
Add a hanger made with 10 – 12” of embroidery floss to hang your star on the Christmas tree, on a gift bag, to give as a gift and more. I use all (6) strands of floss and put it through the top of the woven square with an embroidery needle. Pull the floss through and tie in a knot to the desired length.
Play with fabrics, textures and color. Make stars with one, two, three or four different fabrics. The possibilities are endless.
