FREE SEWING TUTORIAL: Button Up Neck Warmer
Looking for a quick and easy scarf pattern? A great way to stay warm in the winter and they make great gifts!
MATERIALS LIST:
- 10″ x 29″ fabric for front (I used Buffalo Plaid Gray from my Send Me to the Woods fabric collection from Riley Blake Designs)
- 10″ x 29″ fleece backing
- 3 buttons
- thread
TIP: If you want a loser fit or for a wider neck use 10″ x 32-34″
While there are many ways to place buttons and buttonholes I’m going to show you a three-button method. Once you get the idea you can get creative with different sizes and numbers of buttons and buttonhole placement.
With right sides together, clip or pin the front fabric and the fleece backing together.
STITCH around with a 5/8″ seam allowance, leaving a space open for turning right side out.
TIP: I use a different colored clip where I want to stop stitching to leave the open space for turning so I don’t get over-zealous and stitch all the way around!
TURN right side out and press.
TOPSTITCH 1/4″ from the edge.
TIP: I used bobbin thread to match the fleece and top thread to match my top fabric so the stitching would blend with the fabrics.
Add Buttonholes & Buttons
Once you sew the fabric and fleece together and topstitch, it’s time to add the buttons and buttonholes!
MARK where the buttons and buttonholes go clips or pins as shown below.
SEW the buttonholes first using the clips as a guide and following your machine instructions.
If you have a Janome machine with an automatic buttonhole foot, CLICK HERE to see my video tutorial about how easy it is to use!
FOLD the button holes down to where you put the clips or pins to mark your button placement.
LINE UP the edges of the scarf (shorter buttonhole edge to longer neck wrap edge where the buttons go.)
PLACE a straight pin through the center of the buttonhole to mark where the center of your button should go.
REPEAT for all buttonholes.
Carefully fold back the buttonhole part of the fabric, keeping the point of the pin in the bottom fabric.
Tip the pin and insert into fabric – keeping the point in the center spot you marked.
REPEAT for each button placement pin.
SEW BUTTON(s) in place by machine or hand.
Putting on your Neck Wrap
To put your wrap on, lay the side with the buttons over your left shoulder. Bring the buttonhole enda around your neck and over the right shoulder. Line up the edges of the wrap and button.
Fold down around the neck to let some of the fleece show.
Voila! You are done!
Once you create one of these Neck Wraps you will realize how simple it is to create your own variations. Play with button size, number and placement.
