FREE QUILT BLOCK TUTORIAL: Friendship Star
Want to learn to sew a quick and versatile quilt block? The Friendship Star quilt block is a great place to start!
This tutorial creates a 15″ finished block.
I decided on this size because I wanted to fussy cut one of the large animals from the Main Print in my Send Me to the Woods fabric line – just love how the moose looks in the middle!
How to Make a Friendship Star Quilt Block
Example shown creates a 15″ finished block – see the cutting chart for alternate size finished blocks.
Use 1/4″ scant Seam allowance throughout.
FABRIC REQUIREMENTS:
FABRIC 1: Send me To the Woods Forest Brown
- (4) 5 1/2″ squares – for corners
- (2) 5 7/8″ squares – for HST
FABRIC 2: Send me To the Woods Main Gray
- fussy cut one 5 1/2″ square for the center of your block
FABRIC 3: Send me To the Woods Toss Gray
- (2) 5 7/8″ squares – for HST
- optional: use this fabric for the center square too instead of using FABRIC 2
If you want to create a different size Friendship Star quilt block, simply change the size blocks you cut and sew based on the chart below.
STEP 1: Create 4 half-square triangles (HST)
Place the FABRIC 1 and FABRIC 3 HST squares, right sides together. (You will make 2 sets)
Draw a line diagonally on one square.
Stitch 1/4″ to each side of the line.
Cut on the diagonal line you drew originally.
Press towards the darker color fabric.
STEP 2: Arrange the blocks that make your Friendship Star
Layout your Friendship Star block as shown. I like to put mine on a felt square or wool pressing square so everything stays in place and I can move it if need be. Pay attention to any directionality of your fabric.
STEP 3: Sew the Friendship Star Block together
Sew the 3 building blocks together for each row. Press seams open.
Sew the 3 rows together to make the Friendship Star block. Press seams open and square the block.
Your finished block should be 15.5″ square.
OPTIONAL: Create a Wall Hanging or Large Square for a Table
This block is a great size for a wall hanging or to put on a table.
I added a 3″ finished border and binding to the Friendship Star Quilt Block to create a 21 1/2″ square that can hang on a wall or go on a table.
ADDITIONAL FABRIC REQUIREMENTS:
FABRIC 1: Send me To the Woods Forest Brown
- cut 3 pieces WOF (width of fabric) – 2 1/2″ wide for binding
FABRIC 3: Send me To the Woods Toss Gray
- cut 2 pieces WOF – 3 1/2″ wide for border sashing
FABRIC 2: Send me To the Woods Main Gray
- 23″ square for backing
QUILT BATTING – 23″ square
Sew the sashing on the top and bottom of the Friendship Star block then press seams open.
Add sashing to the right and left sides and press seams open.
Layer the Friendship Star Quilt top on batting and the backing fabric. Quilt as desired.
Use the Send me To the Woods Forest Brown fabric to bind the quilt.
Pretty quick and easy – have a creative day!
